Andover Rowing Association, Inc. was formed in May of 2008 as a subsidiary of Essex Rowing Club, Inc. The organization was developed specifically to augment the competitive opportunities available for athletes of Essex who are also students of Andover Public Schools by providing access to scholastic events not traditionally available to club teams such as Essex. Andover Rowing is recognized by the Massachusetts Public Schools Rowing Association as the representative of Andover Public Schools in competitive events within the state, including the championship regatta which is held each May. Andover Rowing Association operates completely under the auspices of Essex Rowing and all athletes of Essex that attend Andover Public Schools or are homeschooled within that district are also athletes of ARA. As such they have the opportunity to compete scholastically representing Andover High School and its corresponding middle schools in appropriate events.
Andover Rowing Association's programs are synonymous with Essex Rowing Club's programs. Andover student-atheltes interested in rowing during one of our four seasons should go to the Essex page and register there. All athletes of Essex that attend an Andover Public School will be automatically identified as atheltes of Andover Rowing Associaiton upon registering and as such will be eligible for selection to Andover's scholastic team in the spring. Program Information >
In the sport of rowing, the fall, winter, and summer are club seasons. Andover atheltes will train and compete under the banner of Essex Rowing during these periods. However in the spring, Andover athletes will compete as both Essex and Andover. As Essex athletes they will prepare for competition at the regional and national level. As Andover their focus is on state-wide competition, specifically the Massachusetts Public Schools Championship at which they will represent Andover High School. Prior to the spring championship, our Andover crews have at least three regular season competitions (also under the banner of Andover High School) against various other Massachusetts public school teams.
The dynamic we use allows our Andover athletes to develop within a national caliber club program and compete with the best athletes from throughout the region, and then step back into the scholastic arena to guage themselves against their traditional rivals. As noted below with our most recent graduating class, this formula often finds our student athletes entering the nations best undergradute academic and athletic programs. More About Essex Rowing >
